Chris DeWitt

Lead with the relationship. Solve the real problem. Build the right thing. Software engineer by trade. Nearly two decades shipping software at the intersection of strict compliance and real customer outcomes. Founder of Settled. Based in Missoula, Montana — open to engagements local and remote.

What I'm working on

Settled — Founder. ACH payments and unconditional lien-waiver releases for residential construction lending. Built for the trades — the subs, the GCs, the community banks lending into builds in the mountain west.

Consulting — 60-minute sessions and longer engagements via AI Fluency. Solving hard technology problems where security, compliance, and shipping cadence all have to hold up at once.

Background

Stealth Talent Solutions — Founding Partner. Talent advisory placing senior engineering, security, and product leaders into companies where the work is real and the bar is high. Built on the network and operating reps from the rest of this list.

NetDocuments — Senior Director of Engineering. Led engineering across the department through a multi-year public-cloud migration to AWS (5 global commercial regions + 1 government region) and the Microsoft Word co-authoring launch that became a flagship enterprise capability. FedRAMP and SOC 2 throughout.

Submittable — fintech at scale. Engineering Manager → Director of Engineering, ~3 years. Hired and led the fintech team that delivered $2.4B in fund distribution through KYC, IDV, and US Bank integrations. Sending billions of real dollars to real recipients is a discipline: every cent reconciles, every authorization is auditable, every failure mode is a known failure mode. Stood up the multi-cloud internal developer platform; ran SRE, DevOps, and Security in partnership with the Heads of Security and Compliance, supporting HIPAA.

LexisNexis & StateNet — where I grew up in legaltech. Started in data entry, progressed to Software Engineering Lead over nearly a decade. Led the migration of a 30+ year-old Perl monolith to Kubernetes. Legaltech is where security and compliance stopped being a checklist and started being part of how I think about every system I touch — the floor, not friction.

Across the arc: founder-owned, venture-backed, PE-backed, and public companies. Compliance frameworks shipped under include FedRAMP, SOC 2, HIPAA, and CCPA. Deep operating experience on AWS, Azure, and Kubernetes. The two strands — legaltech's security rigor and fintech's ledger discipline — are why Settled exists at the shape it does: real money moving with real audit trails, not workflow-as-a-service.

Email is the right channel: chris@settled.work.

For Settled: if you're a community bank lending into residential construction, a GC running multiple builds, or a sub who'd rather not drive to the title company anymore — I want to hear from you.

For consulting: book a session via AI Fluency or email me directly. Local (Missoula) or remote both work.
